The Issue

World Hunger is on the rise; yet, an estimated one third of all food produced globally is lost or goes to waste.

We all have a part to play in reducing food loss and waste, not only for the sake of the food but for the resources that go into it (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations 2020).

How much food gets wasted?

6.6 million tonnes of food was wasted in the UK – with households accounting for 70% of this figure.

34% of the food thrown away in households, consists of fresh fruit
and vegetables (Wrap 2020).

Which fruit and vegetables do we throw away the most?

Every single day in UK homes we  throw away approximately:

2.7 million carrots, 86,000 lettuces (the tip of the iceberg),
800,000 apples, 920,000 bananas, 1.2 million tomatoes (Wrap 2020).

Reducing food loss and waste.

Several Types of fruit and vegetables continue to ripen after being picked, these fruits are called Climacteric.  Climacteric fruit and vegetables release ethylene gas which cause the produce to continue to mature.  This maturation can alter the colour and texture of the produce, shortening its shelf life.

Our SYM Fresh bags have a microporous film structure which will adsorb and trap ethylene inside the film.  This effectively delays ripening and regulates moisture to slow down the drying out process, helping to extend the shelf life and conserving the nutritional qualities, crispiness and flavour. Our SYM Fresh bags have been proven to extend the life of the fruit and veg up to 40%  when used correctly.

SYM Fresh bags can be reused multiple times. Just rinse the used bag, let it dry and fill it again with new produce.

Both the bags and the packaging can be recycled (please follow recycling guidelines in your area).

Scientifically tested

Climacteric fruit and vegetables enter a ‘climacteric phase’ after harvest i.e. they continue to ripen.  During the ripening process the fruits emit ethylene along with an increased rate of respiration. *Tested according to EU) No 10/2011 of 14 January 2011 and Article 3 of European Regulation No.1935/2004, U.S. 21 CFR F.D.A Regulation part 177.1520 Clause 3.1a., ASTM: D6954 and ANVISA Resolution No 105 of 19  May 1999.
