Antimicrobial Science

All the products we sell contain a special additive technology called d2p, this additive makes the plastics smarter which have a positive impact on the environment around us.  Different ranges of d2p additives have different effects on the plastics they go into.

d2p additives are a product of Symphony Environmental Ltd, a UK publicly listed company and so everything is closely monitored, tested and proven in independent international testing facilities.

d2p additives are included in small amounts at the beginning of the manufacturing process and so the products maintain their unique qualities whilst gaining clever properties eg antimicrobial or ethylene absorption  which stay with the product for the whole of its useful life.

Microbes are everywhere. Each square centimetre of skin alone harbours about 100,000 bacteria, and a single sneeze can spray droplets infested with bacteria and viruses as far as 2 metres.

The microbial lifespan depends on many factors. Viruses must invade cells of a living host to replicate, but outside a living host they can survive for several days. Bacteria do not need a living host to reproduce.

Our masterbatch can offer antimicrobial protection for a wide variety of surfaces – including plastic, latex, nitrile, rubber, silicone, paint, lacquers and inks.

This additive offers a cost-effective protection against contamination, staining, discolouration and odour caused by bacteria and fungi

How Anti-Microbial Technology works

Stage 1

The technology enters the bacterial membrane and causes damage and disruption to the cellular wall before penetrating the cell.

Stage 2

The smart additive is highly reactive with the cell enzymes and deactivates these vital molecules.

Stage 3

Our technology interrupts the cell DNA thus preventing cell formation and replication.

Methods for Assessing Level of Protection

Against Bacteria:  ISO 22196 (against both Gram+ and Gram- bacteria types)

Against Viruses: ISO 21702-19 (and modified ISO 22196)

Against Fungi: ISO 16869 and ASTM-2180 and ASTM G-21

Against Algae: ASTM D-5589
